Refining and Processing Petroleum

Collected crude oil and natural gas are of little use in their raw state. Their value lies in what is created form them—fuels, lubricating oils, waxes, asphalt, and petrochemicals.

In this module you will learn:

• Components that make up crude oil
• Crude oil classification, some standard types of crude oil
• Types of hydrocarbons involved in petroleum refining
• Refined products and/or refining processes related to each hydrocarbon
• Role refining plays in the oil supply and distribution chain
• Basic economic issues related to refining
• Environmental concerns relating to oil refining
• What assays are
• Key refining processes of separation, conversion and treating
• Types of refineries and their processes: topping, hydroskimming, cracking and full conversion

In order to successfully complete this module you will be required to:

• Go through all the lessons in the module.
• Complete the practice items.
• Complete the module quiz with a passing grade of 70%. You will have 2 chances to complete the quiz.

At the end, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. It should take you approximately 75-90 minutes to complete this module.
